:13. yet again the country is waking up to news that lawmakers in washington, d.c. still don't have a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. kyla campbell reports we are just hours away from automatic tax increases and government spending cuts. >> reporter: frustration is hitting a speak this morning after talking stalled last night. the house and senate will get back to work over the next few hours. senators have been trying to come up with a deal but with no luck. new mitch mcconnell is negotiating with vice president joe biden. if political leaders can not come up with a plan by midnight tonight tax rates for all americans will increase. >> if there is an ultimate compromise, there will be parts of it i find disgusting and rep hencable which i may have to swallow in the name of finding a compromise. >> reporter: how will this effect you come tomorrow morning? if there is not a deal reach there won't be a drastic change in your next paychecks. if this plays out long-term the average american middle class family stands to lose out on $2,000 to $3,000 over the next year due to the increased taxes

. alison burns is in our washington, d.c. newsroom with what is at stake and when we could hear from the court. >> reporter: pam within the next few hours we expect to get word from the u.s. supreme court about more of the cases it will consider this term. the justices met friday to talk about a number of challenges to gay marriage laws. among them california's ban on same sex marriage proposition 8. supporters of same sex marriage are hoping the court will decide not to review prop 8. that would mean the lower court ruling would take hold legalizing same sex marriage in california. san francisco city officials tell us they are ready to perform marriages as soon as tomorrow. >> we will be ready with volunteers that we already have in place and volunteers who are being trained today. we'll have a one-stop shop for anyone who wants to get married. >> reporter: and we are waiting for word from the court. we'll bring it for you here on channel 2. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. >>> last night president obama congratulates zone people honored for --

the hit-and-run accident that slightly injured a police officer in the 600 block of washington street. a vehicle hit him and sped off. the officer suffered minor injuries and did not need to go toles hospital. no arrests -- to the hospital. no arrests have been made in the case. >>> it's crab season. but local fishermen's boats are not budging from the docks. it's all because of a price war over crab. tara moriarty joins us live from the newsroom to explain what is making the strike worse. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: good afternoon. more than 100 local crab fisher boats have not left the harbor but some oregon fishermen is hate hitting the -- are feeling the pinch. one boat offloading was from oregon. before thanksgiving, fishermen were earning $3 a pound and demand took a dip and the prices plunged. and that's caused a shortage of the crab in the bay area. the dispute started on sunday when crab boat skippers heard that they were planning to cut the prices to $1.80 for fresh crab. >> we started at 3 bucks. we fished for a couple of weeks before the wind came up and now the win

washington, d.c. newsroom monitoring the high court. what is the latest? >> reporter: dave, in just about 20 minutes the supreme court is expected to release a list of cases it is going to consider this term. san francisco city officials tell us they will be ready to perform same sex weddings as early as tomorrow if the court decides not to take up proposition 8. california's ban on gay marriage. a lower court overturned the law and same sex marriage supporters are hoping the supreme court will let that decision stand. >> we are prepared for the crowds that we had in 2004 and 2008. and again we will just be open and ready for anyone who wants to come and get married. >> the justices are also considering several challenges to a federal law that limits benefits for same sex couples. several legal analysts are saying this morning that the justices might want to meet again to talk about which of the gay marriage cases they will consider and that meeting likely wouldn't happen until friday so the wait might continue. reporting live alison burns. >>> more problems for controversial comedian katt w
